Donate to Martlets HospiceOxygen is dangerously low, so it’s hospital for me,
The Ambulance came super quick, for my trip to A & E!
Taken straight to resus, no messing about,
I'm feeling terrified, to that there is no doubt!
Steve and the boys are with me, I see fear in their eyes,
Given what they are watching, it comes as no surprise.
They stick a massive suction tube, up nose and down to lungs,
But nose explodes with blood, so procedure can't be done.
Various Doctors take a look, and one takes Steve aside,
Intensive care is mentioned, I'm scared I'm going to die!
Aspiration pneumonia and treated for sepsis too,
Temperature is raging, and I don't know if I'll pull through.
Chest x-ray and bloods, but my veins disappear,
Ultrasound is used, and veins magically reappear.
None of us have slept, for 48 hours or more!
Finally relief, as I am moved to Respiratory ward.
Staff are lovely, but they don't get MND,
It soon becomes apparent, that I need someone with me.
So my boys take turns, to stay with me at night,
Steve does the day, which was not a pretty sight!
Chest physio is brutal, and happens twice a day,
But I know it is vital, to not prolong my stay.
I can't sleep at night, ward is noisy and hot,
If I sweat anymore, I feel my body will rot!
I am moved once again, neurology ward this time,
I'm hoping that it's cooler and everything will be fine.
Staff are nice, but there are simply, not enough,
The conditions that they work in, are really quite tough.
The Palliative care team, plan to get me out,
To Martlets Hospice, which fills my head with doubt.
I thought that a hospice, was a place you go to die,
But it's so much more, how silly am I?
I arrived at The Martlets, with relief and despair,
Suction machine was broken, on the ambulance there.
Once I was inside, I felt completely at ease,
Everyone was lovely, and wanted to please.
The room is more like, a 5 star hotel,
With everything you need, when you're feeling unwell.
The staff want to know, what makes me be me,
Much better than being known as, that girl with MND.
I'm delighted to find, a local cat comes in,
It really lifts my mood, every time that I see him.
There is a wonderful bath here, with music and lights,
A comfy sofa bed, for your guest to sleep at night.
Now to the staff, who exceed in every way,
I'm feel like I'm in Utopia, every single day.
If Angel's are real, it definitely would be them,
Each and every one, is a pure and rare gem.
The Doctors come each day, spending all the time I need,
Their caring bedside manner, really does exceed.
The aim is to get me well enough, to get home where I belong,
Wean me off the oxygen, and make sure my lungs are strong.
The words Palliative and Hospice, terrified me before,
So if you feel the same, I just want to reassure.
It's not just end of life, it's symptom management too,
All you need to know, is they will do their best for you.
Only 24% of the Martlets is funded, the rest is charity run,
So to keep it running, lots of fundraising is done.
So if you see a collection, or do something worthwhile,
Please donate to them, and help many people smile.
